Responding to new risks

We are committed to ongoing research and investigation into emerging trends relating to the abuse of children. We have conducted groundbreaking research in diverse areas including: female offenders, children in prostitution, internet safety and the modus operandi of child sex offenders including travelling sex offenders.

As trends emerge, we act to protect children from the gaps that leave them vulnerable to abuse and exploitation.  Child Wise advocates for law reform and the improvement of child protection systems.

Child Wise was instrumental in the enactment of the 1994 Extraterritorial Legislation to prosecute child sex tourists, the 1999 Sex Slavery Legislation to prosecute sex traffickers, and the tightening up of child sponsorship procedures.

We have encouraged the Federal Government to create a national Internet safety education program and a hotline to report Internet crimes.  Additionally, we have worked in partnership with the government to develop Australia’s National Plan to Combat the Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children.

We are committed to expanding our knowledge base to ensure that our activities and programs remain effective, proactive and responsive. We undertake research both within Australia and overseas, in order to cultivate a global perspective of the issues relating to child abuse.
